Pens down everyone, it’s #NationalPencilDay!

In 2004, Peter Tyndall headed the Free Pencil Movement, uniting the Melbourne art community against the bans on sketching and note-taking inside some of the @ngv’s gallery spaces. ❌✏️

Maintaining his stance that sketching has historically been a way to educate artists, Peter staged silent protests in Scream masks— a reference to the NGV’s advertising campaign at the time.

Since the 70s, Peter Tyndall has maintained regular written correspondence with a range of writers, artists, curators and gallery directors. One of his longest correspondences was with celebrated Australian artist Bob McPherson, with whom he exchanged mail with daily for 35 years. 📝💌📫

Exhibiting upstairs inside this glass cabinet, Tyndall’s ‘mail art’ takes a variety of forms including drawings, postcards, collages, newspaper articles and objects of shared interest like a football scarf or a music score.

“I went to a boarding school for four years where there were 12 football ovals and no art classes. I was the kid that kept drawing all the time, so my inclination was to be an artist”. 🏈🎨

Early on in his career, Peter Tyndall was advised

Early on in his career, Peter Tyndall was advised by art critic-meets-historian Patrick McCaughey that by the time he saw his one-millionth painting, he would recognise it within the works of a hundred artists.

Diligently following McCaughey’s advice to the ‘extreme’, Tyndall removed everything he recognised as belonging to other artists from his work until he was essentially left with a blank canvas… 🔳

Charting 50 years of artistic exploration, Peter Tyndall is exhibiting Wednesday to Sunday, 11am – 5pm.

Once situated at 566 Lonsdale Street, ‘Art Proje

Once situated at 566 Lonsdale Street, ‘Art Projects’ was a gallery centred on the serious presentation of experimental art.

The venue holds a special place in Tyndall’s heart— his work exhibited continuously within its walls from 1980 right up until it’s eventual closure. Now this perfectly-to-scale replica of Art Projects is exhibiting as part of Tyndall’s 50 year retrospective.
