Clapping is a polysemic gesture and a ubiquitous human behaviour. When it is purposeful, expressive, and directed towards others, we call it applause. Applause is a group act, sometimes deeply visceral and at other times a social contagion. The context of applause is shaped by culture. Its sound embodies a message and reflects an experience.
